Size:44
A shoe that has to be tried on to understand, blending the masculine swagger of a cowboy boot with a dash of 1970’s androgyny rock star energy
Highly coveted model among the more adventurous male fashion enthusiasts, the 65mm“Jonny”(not Johnny) was conceived during the short but memorable era of 2000-2004 when Tom Ford took over the reins of the YSL Rive Gauche label. There are some sources online that claim the boots were launched in 2004, which we interpreted as the addition of the cuban heel, as the design of the boot with an extended traditional block heel has be around since 2002. The evolution of the cuban heel very much coincides with the SS04 Gucci Menswear collection, which we can see Ford reminiscing the image of Texas cowboys on his mind within the season. These cuban heel boots were still produced and sold until Pilati left the label in 2012 and hedi redesigned them to a lower 40mm heel
We did found an identical match to the boots on the Spring 2004 menswear runway, with brown wingtips (broguing details) and the very distinctive cuban heel. We also found pictures of Lenny Kravitz rocking these boots on two different occasions in 2004 and 2006 respectively (also wearing a SS05 YSLRV brown leather jacket).
We would like to note that these bear the older Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche logo instead of the newer gold YSL logo stamp, also the relatively lower serial number as a distinction from the later issues of the boot.
Beautifully aged supple brown leather with wingtip detail, hidden zipper with YSL logo engraving, and of course the 65mm cuban heel
We would like to note that the heel is an authentic stacked leather heel, the traditional shoemaking method for a sturdy construction, as opposed to the hollow plastic heels with leather veneer that many have complained in the Hedi era. We even found an article in a Japanese magazine that have sawed the boots in half(apologies for the low quality) to reveal all its internal glory. The weight and height of the heel will provide the wearer a completely unique experience compared to any other boot
